Our History
Halpenny Travel was established in 1920, by Joe Halpenny. At this time it was known as “The Violet Bus Service” and the main office was in the Violet Hotel, Blackrock. The main service operated was between Dundalk and Blackrock (a small seaside village on Irelands’ east coast). The distance between both areas is approximately 3 miles. This service was an integral part of the lives of the locals and therefore continued to operate even through the war. The service was based on two vehicles – Leyland cubs. These buses were built to stand the test of time, as one of them is still on the go and can be seen in The Transport Museum, Howth, Co. Dublin.
Today Halpenny Travel is operated by Joe Halpenny’s grandson, John Halpenny. The business has developed over the years and has grown steadily by diversifying into new areas. Town services are still a core part of the business and with the introduction of several new services in recent years,
Halpenny Travel now operates town services in most areas of Dundalk and surrounding areas. Halpenny Travel also operates a reliable and efficient service to all major concert venues in particular to The O2 arena in Dublin.
Private hire has also become an integral part of the business for Halpenny Travel and we have luxury coaches available for all occasions including:
Sports & Social Outings,
Schools & Educational Tours.
Weddings, Hens & Stags.
